Exploring Tastes from the Mountains
Tastes from the Mountains is a gourmet tasting event that is integral to the Cook-off. It is a “dine-around” reception that features and celebrates West Virginia’s farm products gathered and provided by the state Department of Agriculture—a partner in sponsoring the Cook-Off. Much of the food is prepared by staff from the host property.
Some is preserved by ProStart Teachers and students in the summer prior to the event.
These observations on the Cast Iron Cook-Off® are excerpted from New Appalachian Cuisine® The Cast Iron Cook-Off®, an article by Travis Vandal in Wonderful West Virginia, published by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.
Travis Vandal is a seventh-grade English teacher and writer who traveled to all 55 counties in West Virginia in 2008. A photograph book of his travels is in the works.
